As mentioned in my review of the new double album from Fughu (read elsewhere on these pages) I would return with a review of their debut album from 2009 and here it is! Their interest and inspiration in the world and music of Dream Theater are clearly evident here, as this album are more on the heavy side as opposed to their new double, which had several styles and inspiration sources. What immediately stands out here, are the lead singer, with his fantastic range and powerful voice, think a blend of Michael Sadler (Saga) & James La Brie (Dream Theater) and you are almost there! Mind you that doesn't mean that the musicians here are left behind, on the contrary they are capable - very capable, they could easily open for DT concert wise. Not as complex and musically technique driven as DT, but they are up there with some very excellent compositions and superb delivery! I love their varied tempo and style change, they even dare to try out and implement Argentine tango tradition, though brief, on the title track "Absence", brilliant track !!
I love this album the more I hear it !! Highly recommended to friends of DT and lovers of intelligent prog-metal. You need to hear this debut album and when you do (and you must!!) you will crave more!! Lucky you ...fast forward to the new double album by these fine musicians! Spring is here and so are the new breed of prog metal ...please welcome FUGHU !!
